Is the Dachshund Right for You?
Carol's Puppies
In their `nonprofessional` lives--that is, in their role as family dogs--dachshunds of strong character will also try to get to the head of the pack.  The `pack` in this case is made up of the members of its human family."

UNDERSTANDING DACHSHUNDS

"Independence, or what could be called obstinacy, is deeply rooted in the dachshund's character.  Our little friend needs this quality; it is essential to its survival.  After all, the dachshund, or `badger dog` was originally used for hunting, in which it performed a very specific task.  When a dachshund was sent digging underground to drive a badger or fox from its burrow, it was a matter of life and death.  It requires great courage and iron determination to accomplish this task.  No human can come to its aid when it is down there, and it must rely completely on itself.  It takes a strong will to embark on--and succeed at--such a venture time and again.
The dachshund is a wonderful dog.  They are almost human like.  If you talk with a dachshund lover, it's not long that you realize they are "owned" by the dog and not they own the dachshund.

The dachshund is known as the odorless dog.  They can step outside for a bit in the hot, summer sun and like most dogs, when they return inside, have the distinct smell of a hot, sweaty dog.  However, after a short time, the dachshund will lose that odor.  Makes me wonder if this isn't part of the badger hunting success.

The dachshund makes a great companion no matter where you live.  They are great apartment dogs and love the countryside as well.  Whether it's walks at night in the city or roaming the pasture on a farm, the dachshund adapts well.

Whether you like the nice, neat smooth that is so popular with people with allergies, or you like the fluffy, foo foo long hair, or you like the brisk, feisty wire hair, there is a dachshund right for you.

The AKC dachshund comes in two weight classes.  The miniature for those who want a dog less than 11 pounds or anything over 11 pounds is considered a standard.

Dachshunds are neck snugglers and feet warmers.  Dachshunds are like potato chips you can't have just one;  they are a large dog in a small package; you train the dog or the dog trains you;  these statements are so true about them.
Mendy's Puppies
There are some that will tell you that a dachshund is not for everyone.  It takes a human with a Dachshund personality (stubborn, hardheaded, strong-willed, loving, very determined) to own a dachshund.  Dachshunds can be very clever & vengeful.
These dogs are wonderful loving clowns  & a real joy to have in your family, but that is just it, you have to treat them like a family member or they will let you know real fast that they are not happy with you.  They need a firm, but loving owner----and always remember consistency is a great key here.

Anyone lucky enough to be owned by a dachshund should understand how the dachshund is put together and what they were bred to do.
The dachshund was bred to track, dig to his prey, corner it, and bark to alert the above-ground hunter where he and his prey are located.  The dachshund is a scent hunter and when he is on the scent, he is single minded.  When he goes to ground, he is a formidable adversary.
The dachshunds ears are long to help pick up the scent and his nose is very sensitive to the least little odor.  His teeth and jaws are very strong.  He was bred to "give tongue" as he works so that the hunter is able to locate the den of his prey.
The dachshund we know was developed by the German foresters into what was needed in the forest, a fearless hunter with intelligence to work above and below ground.
Dachshund means Badger Dog.  He was originally placed as a Working dog and then a Sporting dog by AKC but ended up in the Hound Group.
